January 29: Introduction

We will use this class to introduce ourselves and to do a group exercise that asks us to think about privilege, power and privacy as it relates to scholarly work.

  • Organization of the class: how will we organize ourselves as a working group? What do we need to do to make sure that everyone is able to participate from where their education, history and needs are now?
  • What do we mean by “creative response”?
  • What are the uses of contemporary history for politics? Take on the “it gets better” narrative.
  • Discussion About Privacy: what is your history up to this point? How would you want it represented? Are there things you would tell friends but perhaps not family or strangers? Are there things you would feel comfortable talking about to strangers but you would not not want published, put on-line or written about by someone else? Why?
